Witchy Wednesday – Dark Moon Release Spell

It’s somewhat ironic, in an Alanis Morissette kinda way, that as a writer, I had a hard time writing a Dark Moon Release spell. When I first started studying Wicca, all the books (yes, back in the dark days before the interwebz was a thing) had beautiful, poetic spells that I felt needed to be committed to memory for the magic to be effective. I finally relented, and began to copy them on index card “cheat sheets” so I wouldn’t flub up the words and end up like Ash.

Wiseman: When you removed the book from the cradle, did you speak the words?
Ash: Yeah, basically.
Wiseman: Did you speak the exact words?
Ash: Look, maybe I didn’t say every tiny syllable, no. But basically I said them, yeah.

Now, all these years later, I have a hard time casting a spell in any form that resembles a poem, or anything that requires memorization. I’ve been finding as I move into my Maven years (otherwise known as Crone years, but being a big believer in always adding awesome alliteration, I prefer Maiden, Mother, Maven). I work much better making stuff up on the fly.

Tonight is the Dark Scorpio Moon, which is a perfect time to do a spell to honor my upcoming hysterectomy. I decided to create one with a minimum of words, so I could spend less time worrying about doing it “right” and more time focusing on the intent.

Here is the graphic I created (using a picture I took of the September 2015 Full Moon, darkened with a filter, since I can’t snag a picture of the actual dark moon). Please shout out in the comments if you have a favorite release spell, or dark moon ritual – I’d love to hear them!

Dark Moon Release Spell

Dark Moon Release Spell. Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed. Ground and center yourself. Light a stick of your favorite incense (I like sandalwood for this), and watch the smoke swirl around you. As you focus on the smoke, give thanks for the thing you are releasing, appreciating the gifts it brought into your life, and acknowledging it’s now time for it to leave. When you feel the time is right say “I release you” three times. End by saying, “As is my will, so mote it be.” Let the incense burn itself out, and sprinkle the ash outside on a bush or tree.” ~ Traci York. First, this is not a passive voice. Next, I am writing in an active voice. Therefore, my SEO will stop telling me how to write. Furthermore, these sentences are also shorter than twenty words. Rather, stop being so controlling. I will keep going while until you turn green. Dark Moon Release Spell. I can’t believe this is still orange. Finally, it has turned. Success! First, this is not a passive voice.
