Moon Monday – Night after the Full Wolf Moon, part 1

Happy Moon Monday! Last week I mentioned that while I wasn’t able to get a ton of photos of the full moon on January 28th, I did get back outside the following night and managed a goodly amount of shots (almost seventy), despite the freezing cold temps and my persnickety camera battery. To make sorting through them all a little less daunting, I decided to split them up into two folders, then I went through the first to find the best captures for today’s Full Wolf Moon, part 1 (well technically, mostly full as it was the night after). 😂

As I also mentioned last week, I’m pretty sure my battery issue is fixed now, after my husband found an awesome deal on Amazon and ordered me a pair of batteries that came with a charger. I haven’t had a chance to really test drive my camera since, but it’s worked fine for the handful of bird photos I’ve taken over the past week, so I have high hopes!

And on a completely different note, for my Hive friends (and anyone else who’s on Twitter and wants to check it out), the next @hivechat will be tomorrow at 18:00 GMT (1pm EST) and will be hosted by the multi-talented & long time Hive community member @steevc! He has some excellent questions in store for tomorrow, so be sure to follow his Twitter account or keep an eye on the Twitter hash tag to join the discussion.

Last thing before the photos – I’ve reduced the file size, and in some cases tweaked the exposure and/or sharpness a bit, but I haven’t filtered them. The difference in the color of the moon (and the clouds around it) comes from zooming in and out, and bumping the exposure up and down, not from tinting it. It still amazes (and frustrates…lol) me that what I see in the sky isn’t always what turns up on my camera. These were taken with my my Nikon affixed to my tripod), in my Durham New Hampshire yard, around 8pm on January 29th, 2021.

Now on to the photos!

Night after the Full Wolf Moon, part 1

Night after the Full Wolf Moon, part 1
1. The very first shot I got, of the moon rising behind the trees.

2. Zoomed in a bit to get a sharper look.

3. Even closer (and my favorite shot of the night).

4. Then I zoomed all the way out to get a look at the magical sky.

5. Moon shadow, moon shadow…

6. X almost marks the spot.

7. A bit more zoom and a slightly different angle.

8. Funny that I used to get annoyed when tree branches got in the way of the moon, but now I love how it looks.

9. Which is probably why I always take a zillions shots of the same, but slightly different, spot each time.

10. And while I couldn’t tell you exactly where that X is in our yard, seems to me it shows up quite frequently in my moon pictures. Maybe I’ll go through my shots and do a compilation post some Moon Monday. And given how many photos I have of La Luna, it might take me a bit to go through them all… lol

11. A short walk through the yard yields a different pattern. And that’s where I’ll leave it for today. I’ll work on editing the rest for next week, and hope to get out to take my new camera battery for a spin with the next full moon on February 27th. Here’s to hoping it doesn’t live up to its Snow Moon moniker!
