How is it already the 9th? Seems like June just arrived, then all of a sudden – boom, it’s almost the deadline for the @yourtop3 contest over on the Hive platform.! And what a wicked cool, if extremely brain hurty, topic it is – this month we get to pick our top 3 favorite video games…which for me is right up there with narrowing down my three favorite books or movies….argh! 🤣
I briefly considered using the random picker thingy that I’ve used in the past, to make the decision for me, but instead I went with closing my eyes and pointing at the list on my screen the virtual games that had a significant impact on my actual life. So before I change my mind for the billionth time, here they are!
My Top 3 Favorite Video Games
Nomination 1 – Asteroids

REASON
Growing up, I enjoyed playing the arcade version of this, and I remember being ridiculously excited when my late father showed me the floppy disk with the word, “Asteroids” he’d written with a sharpie. I don’t recall where he got it from – I have a vague recollection that one of his customers (he had a home security alarm business) gave it to him, but I can recall the sense of awe I felt when I saw a decent facsimile of the game appear on my dad’s first home computer screen.
Since his business was at that time, literally a home security business (as in, he ran it out of our attic and garage), I had plenty of time to goof around with the game. In fact, Dad and I had many conversations about computers, video games, and the like while he worked. Oh, and for the record while he enjoyed Adventure and Chess, Asteroids became my favorite game to pass the time in between answering phone calls when I helped out in the office.
Nomination 2 – Myst

REASON
I’ve thought about this since the topic was announced, and I’m fairly certain that this is the game that turned me from a gaming “fan” to a “fanatic.” Granted, I didn’t buy any associated bling (was there even Myst bling? LOL!) or cosplay or anything, but soon after hubby & I bought our first home computer, he bought the game for me. As soon as I figured out how to play, I was hooked! I couldn’t stop until I finally finished – which, given it was 1995 and I was also a first time mom, took me longer than I expected.
Now, all these years later, I don’t even remember the outcome of the game, but memories of my late father are also tied up in this one. Not too long before his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in ’96, I remember showing him how Myst worked (in kind of a bittersweet bookend to Asteroids) and how amazed he was at the graphics, as well as the intricacy of the game play. And since Adventure was a favorite of his, he really enjoyed the short time he was able to play Myst when he and my mother visited, before he “went offline” in December 2001.
To this day, whenever I’m particularly impressed by some video game, I think to myself, “Hey Dad – can you believe how cool this is? Look how far we’ve come since ASCII!”
Nomination 3 – World of Warcraft

REASON
Flash forward almost a dozen years (and countless computers) later, and our three kidlets were discovering & loving video games too. I can’t remember for certain which one discovered WoW, but I do know in short order, everyone in the house had an account, except me.
At the time, I was working on my first NaNoWriMo novel, and knowing how easily I could become obsessed distracted, I decided not to tempt myself. I eventually got an account and created a character, but since my helpers were mostly below the age of ten, I really didn’t understand the draw of the game at first. In fact, I spent most of my early days wandering around Stormwind fishing, since I thought that was the entirety of the map! 🤣
Once hubby got involved, a family guild (or should I say guilds, since we had both Alliance and Horde toons) was formed, and we all spent lots of time playing, either together or with peeps we met online. While our family guild had only (with just a handful of exceptions over the years) the five of us, we all also belonged to other guilds.
Also, since we homeschooled, one of the family WoW playing rules was that any chatting, be it trade, guild, or other, had to be with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Who says learning is a pain when your parents are involved can’t be fun?
There are my choices! Apologies to all of my other favorites, including Space Invaders, Wolfenstein, Halo, Serious Sam, Left 4 Dead, Solitaire, NFL Football (Intellivision), Dragon’s Lair, Mahjong, Red Dead Redemption (original & prequel), Flyff (Fly For Fun), Fable, and Neopets – I still love you all too!
Also, while the prizes for this contest are limited to bloggers on the Hive blockchain, I figure there might be some WordPress (or other) bloggers who might want to share their faves too. Instead of offering crypto prizes like the @yourtop3 crew, I thought I’d offer a little social media exposure instead.
So if anyone wants to jump aboard and share your Top 3 Favorite Video Games , please feel free to drop a link to your own post (no time limit) in my comment section (along with your Twitter handle, if you have one), and I’ll do my best to take a peek and give it a tweet!
One last thing – a big thank you to the awesomesauce peeps behind this monthly crypto contest (now with the wicked awesomesauce addition of a Champions League!) @plantstoplanks, @nickyhavey, @foxyspirit, and @cheese4ead – you guys and gals ROCK!
See you all at the Dpoll & have a great month!
Thanks for stopping by!
