The Woods Behind our House for @parul2411’s #ThursdayTreeLove

Today is yet another cloudy, cold (but above freezing, so yay!) day here in New Hampshire, and everything outside, including the woods behind our house, just looks… meh. Knowing that I wouldn’t be able to take pictures of snow dusted trees, snow covered trees (and the time for fall foliage is long past…lol), I thought I might dip into my archive of unpublished pictures to see if I could find some interesting shots. Especially after seeing some beautiful ice covered branches on @melinda010100‘s blog (specifically her Feathered Friends – female Cardinal post), I was hoping to find some “good” shots I hadn’t used yet.

Then I thought, that kind of defeats one of my intentions of joining these tree blog hops, which is to give me the motivation to take some new photos.

My tremor isn’t too bad today (I say as I rap on my wooden desk), and it’s been forever since I’ve walked Sandy (our dog) around in the woods, so I decided to bring my camera & tripod along when I took him out for his morning constitutional.

Eleven snaps in, and the battery on my camera died, even though it’s always either plugged into my computer, or in use. *sigh*

However, not to be deterred, I charged it via a charging pad connected to a wall outlet & went out a couple hours later to try again. This time I made it to nine shots before it died again… *sigh anon*

I did attempt my camera phone for a minute, but then decided to check out what I had before the day completely got away from me. Turns out I had a half dozen from each walk, with one non-blurry shot from my camera phone, that I felt were post worthy. And my camera is currently (HA! See what I did there?) plugged directly into a wall outlet – please cross your fingers for me that it does the trick!

Last thing before I get to the pictures – thanks again to Parul for hosting this awesome blog hop every couple of weeks! And if you want to join in the Tree love blog hop fun, it’s really easy – here’s the description from her latest post today, called #ThursdayTreeLove – 101

Happy new year of Thursday Tree Loves in 2021, readers. Thursday Tree love is a photo feature hosted on this blog on every 2nd and 4th Thursday of a month. The next edition will go live on January 28, 2021. If you would like to play along, post a picture of a tree on your blog, tell me where did you spot the tree and link it back to this post.

If you don’t see the pingback, please leave a link to your post in my comments section. Please make sure that your post’s link is showing up on this latest edition. I will link your posts on my blog in the next edition and spread some love. Let’s come together to appreciate the beautiful nature around us.

Oh, and these were taken in my Durham, NH yard, using my my Nikon affixed to my tripod (other than the last one, snapped with my Samsung Galaxy). While they’re not filtered, I did tweak the exposure and sharpness here and there.

The Woods Behind our House, January 14th, 2021

The Woods Behind our House
1. The sky behind the tall trees almost looks like blue sky, but it’s actually shades of grey.

2. Couldn’t resist getting another new shot of a frequent subject of Thursday Tree Love posts – one of the many Shagbark Hickories on the property, but one of my favorites (especially since it’s at the edge of the yard).

3. The view at the edge of the woods, looking up.

4. The view straight ahead.

5. Hard to see under the leaves and snow, but a number of trees are sharing space with granite stones.

6. A little deeper in the woods, and more trees growing out of/next to the rocks.

7. The start of my second walk in the woods – the sun peeked out a little bit for a moment to say, hello!

8. A few minutes later as I started down a different path in the woods, the sun was still visible. By the time I was walking back (about 20 minutes later) it was completely hidden again.

9. I’m calling this pair, “The Odd Couple.”

10. And this one, “Groot!”

11. One of these days I’ll try to learn all the actual names of all these trees.

12. Even the trees I think are pine trees don’t look as I’d expect, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were a different variety from the Christmas tree kind.

13. Speaking of pine trees, I managed to capture this baby one with my phone (after a half dozen tries, that is).

Happy Thursday Tree Love everyone!

  1. Wow! Enjoyed the walk in the woods ! (from the comfort of my home)!! I totally relate to device batteries giving up at a crucial moment!

  2. You got some brilliant shots there, Traci. The one looking up of the Shagbrk Hickory and that baby pine is my favorite. I had to force myself to pick two cos the look of the trees, the grey sky and the Sun was too tempting to not like. Even when the battery died on you two times, you got the spirit of the season. Well done!

Thanks so much for encouraging, sharing and joining, Traci. It means a lot and I am glad you are around.

  3. The only tree I knew was the shagbark hickory. My husband is better at tree ID than I am, have to admit. Your skies look similar to ours this past week. In one of your photos, did I spy crows roosting? Shameless self promotion, that’s going to be my Thursday tree love post topic tomorrow – crows and trees.
