The Full Cold Supermoon in Gemini – Simple Rituals and Infographic for December 3rd 2017

On Sunday December 3rd 2017 at 10:46 am (ET), the The Full Cold Supermoon in Gemini arrives in my neck of the woods (which happens to be eight hours and twenty minutes after Mercury goes Retrograde). However, your mileage may vary – be sure to check for your local time HERE.

To suss out the meaning behind an Gemini full moon, I once again scoured the interwebz for people more well-versed in astrology than me. Here are some tidbits I’ve gleaned from my search. If you’re a regular visitor to this blog, some of this info will be a repeat – if you want to skip to the new stuff, click HERE.

So the moon is full. What’s so significant about that?

I don’t know about you, but I notice that when the moon turns full, my hair gets longer, my teeth get sharper, and I have a wicked craving for steak…

Okay, in all seriousness, for those who follow The Wheel of the Year, the full moon is an esbat.

From what I can gather, the term (which, roughly translated from 16th Century French, means “frolic, romp, disport“) came into use because of Margaret Murray, author of The Witch-Cult in Western Europe: A Study in Anthropology. It’s generally viewed as the best and most powerful time each month for magical workings.

What kind of magic?

According to The AstroTwins

Full moons are times for completions, creative outpourings, and harvesting. They’re also your cue to cash in on anything you started at the corresponding new moon six months earlier. What have you been building toward? Full moons act as giant cosmic spotlights, so they can be illuminating. Everything comes out into the open in the light of the full moon—including the parts of human nature known as the “shadow.”

Gotcha. Now, how do I work with the moon magic?

Here’s a great description from The Sage Goddess site

One of the most frequent questions I’m asked is HOW to work with full moon energy. We all know that the full moon is special. We try to see it, we take photos of it, but what’s the full moon doing to and with us? How are we interacting with it subconsciously and how can we maximize its effects for magic and well being? She moves the tides and trust me, she’s moving you too.

The moon goes full each month at one specific minute in time, but she is technically full for 48 hours. You have 24 hours before the moment of fullness and 24 hours after to do full moon magic, which includes meditations for abundance and fruition, the honoring of what has been completed in your life, and work that requires the intense energies of the moon in her fullest state. Wiccans and those who practice Earth-based traditions know the full moon as the Esbat, a time of rite and ritual devoted to the Goddess. In this practice, water and white candles adorn altar spaces and prayers and invocations are read to honor the mother and goddess energy of the full moon. But almost every spiritual tradition acknowledges the beauty and majesty of the full moon and you don’t need to be Wiccan or practice witchcraft to enjoy it.

All this astrology stuff is making me wonder – is there a way to find out if I was born during a full moon?

This is the internet. Of course there is.

What the hezmana is a Supermoon?

Here’s an excellent explanation, from the EarthSky website

What’s a supermoon? It’s a new or full moon closely coinciding with perigee – the moon’s closest point to Earth in its monthly orbit. An astrologer, Richard Nolle, coined the term supermoon over 30 years ago, but now many in astronomy use it as well. Are supermoons hype? In our opinion … gosh, no, just modern folklore. They’ve entered the popular culture (check out Sophie Hunger’s music video in this post, for example). And they can cause real physical effects, such as larger-than-usual tides. In ancient times, astronomers used an instrument called a diopter to measure the moon’s angular diameter, noting the variation in size of close and far moons. According to the definition of supermoon coined by Nolle, the year 2016 has a total of six supermoons. The new moons of March, April and May and the full moons of October, November and December all qualify as supermoons.

If you’re not able to view it from the comfort of your backyard, The Virtual Telescope Project will be running a live stream of the event. Click HERE to go to their site.

How about this specific Full Moon in Gemini?

Whilst Googling for info about the September Dark Moon, I discovered this new-ish site, and fell in love with Rosebud Baker‘s take on all things celestial. Naturally it was the first place I checked when writing this post, and I wasn’t disappointed. Here’s a taste of her awesomesauce article, “The Meaning Of The Supermoon For Your Sign Signals A Shift In Communication“. Be sure to check out the rest of her article, which includes the themes of this Supermoon.

There’s a bad moon on the horizon, ladies and gents. It’s a big bad supermoon… but it’s not actually bad. It’s going to be beautiful, not only because of its size, but because it’s the last supermoon of 2017, also referred to as “The Cold Moon.” The December 2017 supermoon is actually going to be in the sky on the night of Dec. 3, so get your warmest blankets and sleeping bags and plan yourself a trip somewhere you can see the sky, even if it’s on your roof. Once you find out the meaning of the supermoon for your zodiac sign, You won’t regret participating in this gorgeous celestial event. You might be asking yourself, “What is a supermoon?” Well, a supermoon is basically a moon that’s as close to the Earth as it can get without flying out of its orbit, resulting in a much bigger and brighter moon than your every-night, run-of-the-mill, boring ass moon.

The supermoon is basically the moon on steroids, and it’s raging. This particular moon is going to be in the sign of Gemini, meaning we are in for an emotional night, when we’ll be feeling all the feels to the greatest degree possible. Here’s what it could mean for you.

  1. This is so interesting, Traci. I was born under a waning crescent moon – characterics creative and imaginative. The moon was gorgeous last night and a bit hazy here in Maine – just like your photo. I think I’ll do some grounding and centering today!

    1. It makes all kinds of sense that you’d be born under those characteristics, Molly. 🙂

And geez, Mercury Retrograde is certainly having a spammy effect on your comments! Know how you mentioned your comment in the BUYB group got marked as spam? I just found this comment in my spam folder! You may need to double up on the grounding and centering – or plan some meals with “…spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam… *grin*

  2. Wow. I’ve got a lot on my plate this month. Hopefully, I can get some stuff done in the next 48 hours! We’ll see if the Cold Moon works for me! I find this stuff so interesting, I wish i had more time to research it. 🙂

    1. I know what you mean, Lisa! Every time I start working on a post like this, I find a bazillion more articles I want to read and a zillion new sites I want to explore. Not enough hours in the day! 😛

    1. 1. I wish! 2. Try what I do – any time I exercise, I reward myself with one of my vodka & ice cream drinks. I’ve never wanted to exercise so much before in my life! 😀
