MM – Rascal Racoon

I planned to post about this latest visitor to my yard last week, but went in a different direction instead. Today seems like a good time to introduce Rascal Racoon – so named because soon after his appearance, my yellow finch feeder was pulled apart, and one of my suet cages disappeared completely.

The day I took these (June 7th), I noticed him roaming around the Avian Eatery, and I skedaddled outside with my camera and tripod. I got lucky – the upstairs A/C was running, and masked any noise I made setting up (at a safe distance away, of course), so Rascal paid me no mind. These are the best of the pictures –

I also got about 30 seconds of video.

  1. Happy Solstice to you! What amazing shots of your friend the raccoon. My favorite is “Contemplating Life.” Well, and the “fierce look” one. You have quite the zoom!

  2. I’m so happy to see that you have a Rascal as well. My Midnight Marauder comes and redecorates for me. He loves sweet hummingbird food and bluebird worms and playing hide and seek with the feeders. Enjoy! I hope you are rewarded with babies.

  3. Gorgeous pictures! These look worthy of a science magazine ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve never seen a raccoon out in the wild. Isn’t that strange? Because I know they must be around, but I’ve never seen one.

  4. Racoons are familiar to me mainly from the cartoons when I was younger! Racoons, squirrels, skunks. lol

I’ve seen squirrels now – in Asia, Europe, and the US. And I finally saw racoons in real life on New Year’s Eve above the Golden Gate Bridge about 20 years ago (visiting my brother-in-law who lives in the US), and was amazed how big they were. They were hanging around a rubbish bin (trash can?), so I much prefer your pics/video of the racoon in nature.

Now I just need to see a skunk.

    1. That’s too funny, Mali!

We’ve had a couple of skunks roaming around the yard, but needless to say, whenever they appear, I run inside as fast as I can! I hope if/when you get to see one in person, it isn’t a lasting (smelly) experience. ๐Ÿ˜€
