Gerina Dunwich’s Earth Day Blessing for Earth Day 2017

This Saturday (April 22nd) is Earth Day 2017, and marks the 47th year of the Earth Day movement. What exactly is it? Here’s a tiny blurb from the official site

The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Twenty years later, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

While the original Earth Day was founded by Christian peace activist John McConnell and put into action mostly by students around 1970, it’s a natural fit for witchy types like myself.

For this year, I’ve recreated the graphic I did for 2016, based on the Earth Day Blessing written by Gerina Dunwich on April 22, 2001 (I originally found it at the Spell A Day section of the Llewellyn site).

Do you do anything to celebrate Earth Day? Have any ideas for a good project? Be sure to shout out in the comment section below.

Earth Day 2017. Draw a pentagram on the ground using a sword, athame, wand, or your finger. Draw a circle clockwise around the pentagram and then place a new white candle in the center of the star. Light the candle, and as you gaze into its flames, focus your thoughts and energies upon the Earth, her rugged beauty and natural wonders, and recite: “Bless the Earth, bless the Earth. She is our mother, fertile and green. She is our healer. She is our queen. She is our teacher, ancient and wise. She must be cherished, let her not perish. She is our goddess in disguise.” ~ Gerina Dunwich, April 22, 2001. First, this is not a passive voice. Next, I am writing in an active voice. Therefore, my SEO will stop telling me how to write. Furthermore, these sentences are also shorter than twenty words. Rather, stop being so controlling. Especially since most of the sentences in this post are not mine. I will keep going while until you turn green. Earth Day 2017. I can’t believe this is still orange. Finally, it has turned. Success! First, this is not a passive voice. 1. Oh, how beautiful. I love it. I will probably spend quality time in the garden, looking for snakes (to love) and nurturing what Mother Earth has given me to tend.We did Earth Hour a few weeks ago, maybe we’ll do a no-electricity thing for a few hours in honor, too. It was very nostalgic and even romantic to read by candlelight and use less energy. I love the daisy and the words!

  2. I love that image — the earth as a teacher. I haven’t made set plans, but we’ll do something outside. Maybe just a really good walk.
