FF – I heart my Dad’s old cameras

Since I’ve been so vocal over the past week or so about my love for my new camera, I thought I’d take a moment to profess my adoration for my late father’s old cameras.

This past Sunday (February 28th) I decided to tackle the ever growing pile of stuff next to my computer desk. Naturally, a short time into the project, I found a box, looked inside, and got completely distracted. Specifically, I found a TON of my dad’s individual 3×3 negatives, stored in little yellow envelopes. The first one I scanned quickly (on my flatbed, then reversed the image) turned out to be my paternal grandparents. I have no idea what year (my aunt thinks it’s around 1950), but it’s an early echo of a picture I’ve already scanned and posted here, from 1964.

Finding this box of negatives reminds me of what a prolific photographer he was, and makes me grateful for all the different cameras he used over the years to take pictures, slides, and film. It also makes me a little crazy, wondering how I’m going to covert all of these, so I can preserve and share them with my family.

I’ve poked around the interwebz, and the Wolverine F2D Mighty 20MP 7-in-1 Film to Digital Converter keeps catching my attention. Does anyone have any experience, or recommendations for good film to digital converter? Please feel free to shout out with them in the comment section.

  1. I got a box back from my step-mother not long ago & it had all these slides of my mom. It was wonderful to see little vignettes of her life that I hadn’t known about & would never have know of without those slides.

I love your Dad’s pics, something you get from him!

So you scan the image & then reverse it? I have a film to digital converter that I have not yet tried. Maybe this week or next. (It’s pretty basic, though, it came from Sharper Image.) I will be interested in seeing if you find one that you like.

    1. That’s so cool, Em!

Yes, I scanned the first photo on my flatbed, then reversed the image on LunaPic (http://www191.lunapic.com/editor/). I tried a few others, but they came out too faded to see very well. I’m hoping that a converter will have better success.

Still investigating, but I’ll be sure to let you know which one I decided on. πŸ™‚

  2. No recommendations, but I have to say, I’m a bit old fashioned, and I totally miss film photography. I like the convenience of digital, but my dad taught me to shoot on a non-digital SLR. Picking up prints was always so exciting because you never knew what you were going to get. Such happy memories! πŸ™‚

    1. I completely agree, Catwoman. While I’m happy that the hundreds of pictures I’m currently snapping don’t cost a penny to process, I still miss heading down to FotoMat, and tearing into the envelope while still sitting in the parking lot. I still own my light-leaking 35mm, and would like to repair it someday, if only for the nostalgia… πŸ™‚
