Full Snow Moon, Lunar Eclipse, and a Comet February 2017

On Friday, February 10th 2017, the Full Snow Moon in Leo (with a side of lunar eclipse) arrives in my time zone. However, your mileage may vary – be sure to check for your local time HERE. Once again, I turned to the interwebz to see what this means for us astrologically.

First up, the Full Snow Moon in Leo. Here’s a small part (and I highly recommend reading the rest – tons of great info!) of an article called, “Lunar Eclipse & Full Moon in Leo: A Rare Chance to Let Go & Receive Limitless Love by Alex Myles over at The Elephant Journal

This first lunar eclipse of the year forces our attention on romantic relationships and demands that we look at the emotional baggage we have been carrying around that weighs us down and damages the bonds we have with loved ones.

Along with the eclipse, the majestic Leo Full Moon radiates a bright burning light of healing energy that illuminates any unresolved issues lingering from our past. We will feel called to dig under the surface and unearth any harmful emotional issues that have been triggering pain and causing us to react in ways that are harmful and destructive.

One of the main wounds that the Leo Moon opens is our fear that we are unworthy and inadequate.

The regal Leo has a great desire to feel secure, worshipped and cherished.

If Leos do not receive love and affection in abundance, they may question their meaning in their loved one’s life, along with their own self-worth. They like to feel like royalty at the center of their loved one’s attention and can become demanding, controlling and possibly even have emotional outbursts if they feel they are being ignored or not adored.

During this full moon, many of us—especially if we are highly sensitive to cosmic energy—will be feeling the effects of Leo’s more dominant characteristics. These characteristics are only making an appearance so that we recognize and heal the emotional wounds that have been challenging us in numerous areas of our lives, particularly within romantic relationships.

This full moon is calling us to courageously open our lion’s tender heart and love ourselves so hard and deeply that we transmute all of our pain and suffering.

Now, a little more about the eclipse. Granted, since this is a Penumbral lunar eclipse it won’t look much different from a normal full moon, but you can certainly still invoke the energy. Last year, I found this wicked awesome quote from the book Green Witchcraft II: Balancing Light & Shadow by Ann Moura, about the effect of a lunar eclipse on magical workings –

This lunar event additionally provides a person with the opportunity of drawing the subconscious into manifestation, which draws upon the power of the Goddess as Transformer. She is the Dark Lady of the subconscious, intuitive mind, Who then transforms the practitioner’s innate desire/will into reality as She Herself changes into the Mother. She gives birth to your desire in a ritual or meditation performed at this time. You focus on what it is you want to have and, as the Moon passes into darkness, envision the desire being gathered by the Crone, then passed into the arms of the Maiden as the sliver of Moon appears heralding the ending of the eclipse, and brought into manifestation by the Mother as the Moon is finally revealed.

For this specific one taking place in Leo, a little blurb from an article over at The Dark Pixie Astrology, called February 2017 New & Full Moons: Lunar Eclipse in Leo & Solar Eclipse in Pisces

It’s eclipse time! February brings with it our first set of eclipses for 2017. First up is a lunar eclipse in fire sign Leo on February 10th at 7:33PM ET. This eclipse in the first in Leo, and lunar eclipses tend to be more emotional, but Leo wants us to be a little happier and more positive, so we can try to look at serious matters and emotional issues through a positive lens. Let’s all have a little fun instead of getting caught up in the badness in the world?

We can be a little more theatrical when we’re upset, and need to take it down a notch (or ten). We can benefit from being creative, playful, and joyful, and see that things aren’t so bad when we try to be positive.

Last, but not least, the comet. Depending on your location, you should be able to view Comet 45P in the eastern sky around 3am EST Saturday morning. As for the magical implications, I wasn’t able to find much in the way of information on the effects of these occasional visitors to our sky, but I thought these two snippets from Comets in Astrology – Possible meanings of these celestial events by Rod Chang was pretty cool –

Now let us look at a way of analysing comets in an imaginative way. First, like Chiron, comets are from the distant boundary of our Solar System, beyond Neptune and Pluto. Many psychological astrologers compare it to the collective unconsciousness in psychology, a theory which Melanie Reinhart applies to Chiron’s effect. I agree that comets do imply fear and horror which comes from the collective unconsciousness. These emotions are invoked by unpredictable events and thus grab our attention.

It is interesting to imagine the formation of comets in this way: formed by dust (earth element), ice (water element) and gases such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (air element) in the ancient, distant region. Then they are given energy when they pass the sun (fire element), thawing and releasing the frozen air.

I would like to suggest that comets symbolise frozen issues that ignite and grab attention, releasing from the abyss of our consciousness such suppressed emotions as fear and horror.

As they warm, comets release gases, but what does this represent? The release of ideas and emotions?

We surely have to notice that what we release is not only emotions but also gases. What are gases? Thoughts, ideas and views. What comets release would never be toxic gases, as those people perceived in 1910; what get released are ideas that are new and innovative.

Finally, the graphic I created for the occasion, using a picture I took of the Full Snow Moon in February 2016 (one of the first moon shots with my then-brand-new Nikon *grin*). Bright Full Snow Moon Eclipse Blessings!
