Don’t worry, be hoppy

Nope, not a typo – I meant hoppy. I promise it will make sense when I’m done. What doesn’t make sense (or does it? *grin*) is that I’ve noticed the blog entries I’ve written as my alter ego, Catherine Trevor (aka InternetG33k) have garnered more attention than my non-fiction stuff. For the moment, I will continue posting a few of my favorite G33k entries, then I will seriously consider resurrecting my fictional self for future installments.

Don’t Worry, Be Hoppy

I am the frog in the pot of water.

Okay, so the myth isn’t true, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s applicable to my life. As I look around my apartment, I have to admit I’m in a rut. Most of my stuff is still in boxes because, after all, this is just a temporary residence until I find a new relationship or a new lease. All the while the water warms up around me, and I lose my ambition to jump.

Example – for dinner the other night, I found myself eating what my beloved and departed grandmother called, “Old Lady’s Roast Beef Dinner.” On the way home from work, I’d stopped by Shaw’s and gotten a half pound of deli roast beef and a can of Dawn Steak & Mushroom gravy. When I got home, I whipped up some instant potatoes, heated the gravy, canned peas, and warmed the roast beef in my toaster oven. I popped open a Guinness and poured a little out into the sink as I headed into the living room with my meal. I sat there eating in front of the TV, and felt an odd sense of déjà vu. I realized – I’ve been in this exact spot, doing the exact same thing almost every single night for weeks.

I’m hoping the arrival of Samhain (the Wiccan New Year) will help shake me out of my doldrums. It’s truly sad when a trip to a book store becomes the highlight of my week. Although, to be fair, I did have an interesting encounter while I was there. It was the night after my old lady dinner, and I stopped by The Book Warehouse in Dover for the first time. After finding Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods“ right by the register (for $4.99!) I knew I’d found a new favorite haunt.

There weren’t many people browsing at the time – a few older women, a teenage looking boy, and a guy with the most amazing blue eyes, who looked to be about my age. After bumping into him literally by the Terry Pratchett’s “Art of Discworld ” (how could anyone walk by the cover and not be momentarily distracted?), he noticed the novel in my hand, and asked me if I’d read anything else by Gaiman. After an amazing discussion, I surprised myself by directing him to RvB and told him what my screen name was, should he ever want to look me up for an online game of Halo. I swear I was momentarily possessed by the spirit of Mae West, given the way I casually walked to the counter, paid for the book and walked out with a small wave – all without tripping or dropping anything.

A short time later, I returned home and found an email from my ex of about the same length as the one I sent a few days ago. He thanked me for my hospitality and said he was happy the hard drive was working out so well. He did say I could call or email if I had any problems with it, but it certainly didn’t sound like a, “hope to see you soon” kind of message. Strangely enough, I was okay with that. I think Mae was still hanging around, inspiring me to “save a boyfriend for a rainy day, and another, in case it doesn’t rain.”

So I’ve decided to stop waiting, “until.” I need to start doing things now. After all, time’s fun when you’re having flies… *grin*
